To mark the 30th anniversary of the International Organization for Migration, IOM Switzerland, the Customs Museum in Cantine di Gandria is presenting a fascinating photo exhibition on migration.

The International Organization for Migration, IOM Switzerland, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. In addition to a photo exhibition at the Kornhausforum in Bern and at the State Secretariat for Migration SEM, various celebrations are being organised to mark this anniversary. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security FOCBS is also playing its part in the successful collaboration between the IOM and the Swiss authorities with this photo exhibition in the Customs Museum.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is part of the United Nations and is the leading intergovernmental organisation for the promotion of humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. The Swiss representation of the IOM was opened in Bern in 1994.
Today, IOM Switzerland is active in the following areas:
- Voluntary return and reintegration support
- Combating human trafficking
- Resettlement and relocation
- Immigration and border management
- Migration policy and research
Darrin Zammit Lupi
The Maltese Darrin Zammit Lupi, born in 1968, began his photographic career in 1992 with The Malta Independent daily newspaper. He then worked as a freelance photographer for the Reuters photo agency from 1996. During this time, he documented the refugee crises in and around the Mediterranean, among other things. Some of his photographic work is now on display in Ticino.
Zammit Lupi has won numerous photography awards and his work has been published in books, on television and online. His photographs appear in the international press, including renowned magazines and newspapers such as TIME, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Paris Match, Der Spiegel and others.
The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security FOCBS would like to thank IOM Switzerland, and is proud to present visitors to the Swiss Customs Museum with a selection of photographs by the highly acclaimed artist Darrin Zammit Lupi.
The striking photos capture all aspects of migration: flight, fear, pain and hardship, but also rescue, joy, confidence and hope.
